(2022) ADHD Women: Invite for Participation

This is an invite for ADHD women to take part in the survey for the research project ‘ADHD Women: Resisting a Neuronormative World’.

A special invite to black and brown ADHD women; lesbian, bi and queer ADHD women; trans and non-binary ADHD women; ADHD women of faith; working class ADHD woman; and ADHD women who are also otherwise disabled.

(The survey of Phase A was open till 14 Oct 2022 and has closed now).

In this sociological project, ADHD women talk about what it is like to experience and resist gendered anti-ADHD inequalities and injustices. Specific attention will be paid to intersectional experiences, such as through racism, homo- and biphobia, transphobia, religious prejudice, classism and/or (non-ADHD) ableism.

This project centres ADHD women’s own voices, and is done by an ADHD woman researcher (Dr Dyi Huijg, University of Roehampton). The project seeks to contribute intersectional, critical and ADHD-affirmative knowledge to the existing gap in what we know about ADHD. In doing so, it moves away from the ‘medical model of ADHD’ that dominates what we know about ADHD.

The following ADHD women can participate:

  • You live in England (UK)
  • You are 20 years or older
  • your diagnosis was at least 24 months ago at the moment you fill in the survey
  • both ADHD women who take and who do not take ADHD medication can take part, but at least one of the following must apply to you:
    • you received a diagnosis of adult ADHD in line with NICE guidelines (e.g. from an NHS psychiatrist, or from a private psychiatrist through NHS Right to Choose)
    • you currently receive ADHD medication in line with NICE guidelines (e.g. from an NHS psychiatrist, or from your GP through a ‘shared care agreement’)
  •  You have 24 months experience of living as an ADHD woman

The first phase of the project is a survey. It has questions about your background and six general questions about gender and ADHD inequalities and injustices. You can fill in the survey here till 14 Oct 2022. (You can fill in the survey without participating in phase 2.)

The second phase consists of personal reflections (e.g. writing, audio, mindmaps, pictures) and one-on-one conversations (phase 2.1) and a group conversation (phase 2.2) – all are optional. There is a reimbursement of £15 for participation in phase 2.1 and in phase 2.2 (in total £30).
