‘Tools, Tips and Tricks’: An Analysis of Gendered Neuronormativity in Self-Help Literature About and For ADHD Women

On 29 January 2021 I participated in the webinar Feminist Perspectives on Neurodiversity and Neuronormativity. My presentation was called “‘Tools, Tips and Tricks’: An Analysis of Gendered Neuronormativity in Self-Help Literature About and For ADHD Women.”

In the presentation I discussed three self-help books:

  1. When moms and kids have ADD (2004), written by Patricia O. Quinn & Kathleen G. Nadeau
  2. Survival Tips for Women with AD/HD. Beyond Piles, Palms & Stickers (2005), written by Terry Matlen
  3. Women with Attention Deficit Disorder: Embrace your differences and transform your life (2005, revised edition), written by Sari Solden (the first edition was published in 1995)

These three books were written for and about ADHD women, and also by ADHD women. In the presentation I discuss how ‘gendered neuronormativity’ is presented in these three books. Currently, a more elaborate and complex analysis of these three books, as well as the three books published in the 2010, is being written up as a journal article.
